About
with Gradient Overlay“Tahoe AL” Miller
Music studies brought Alan Miller from Iowa to Hollywood in 1981 and music remains a major force in his life (see TahoeALmusic.com). The engineer “Tahoe AL” began his career in Los Angeles studying the math and engineering work of Buckminster Fuller, informally with others at the Buckminster Fuller Institute, then essentially a tremendous archive of Fuller’s writings, geometric “artifacts,” photos, recordings and films, and more being managed shortly following Fuller’s death by his grandson, Jamie Snyder.
The study of Fuller took him into formal math and engineering studies at Humboldt State University, Arcata, CA — one of the few in the nation then offering a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering. That led to a career position in Lake Tahoe as a “water quality control engineer” with the State of California in 1993, a career filled with a great variety of engineering projects and challenges.
Those interested in some of Al’s major accomplishments can read a linked offer/resume to lead the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board. Al interviewed for the position and was not selected when a long-time manager from within stepped forward.
He served another decade at Lake Tahoe until retiring in mid-2018 and never sought other employment or updated his resume despite many important projects with dams and restoring the largest marsh at Lake Tahoe. After an extraordinary career with the State he left on excellent terms.
After that, he became an environmental activist for certain Lake Tahoe issues, mainly against the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, but also with his former employer, under dismal new management and a lackluster appointed Lahontan Water Quality Board.
Al sued the TRPA in 2022 for their fraudulent and egregious practices concerning groundwater protection at Lake Tahoe, but mainly to push issues with microplastics that are poisoning Lake Tahoe — perhaps irreversibly — that he asserts the agencies are partly responsible for.
